First Fresh Cherries of the SA Season

- 3rd October 2024

Schoonbee Landgoed is based in the lush Loskop Valley where a wide variety of exceptional fruit is grown by the farmers within our community. Tom and Leani Howard, a husband-and-wife team born and bred in the Loskop Valley, are expanding on what is grown in the valley’s fertile soil through their farm, Howard Exotic Fruit.

Local is Lekker

Sourcing local, in-season fresh fruit is not only in line with our “Made in the Loskop Valley” initiative, it is an essential and responsible approach for consumers and businesses who care about the impact we have on the environment.

We are pleased to collaborate with the up-and-coming local farmers at Howard Exotic Fruit to bring our customers the first fresh cherries of the South African season. No need to make do with the imported cherries that were harvested weeks ago. You can now buy big, beautiful, homegrown cherries of export quality, fresh from the farm.

Why Choose Cherries?

Fresh cherries are so much more than a cheerful treat. The high concentration of plant compounds in cherries give this fruit many health benefits. They are an excellent source of vitamin C, potassium, fiber and other nutrients that help your body to function optimally. Cherries are high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds which can boost exercise recovery by helping to relieve exercise-induced muscle pain, damage and inflammation. The compounds may also reduce chronic disease risk and promote overall health.

How to pit Cherries

While removing the pit from a cherry before eating isn’t necessary, the small pits are harder to eat around than other stone fruit. The easiest and fastest method is to use a specialised cherry pitter. If you don’t have one on hand, you can try the methods below:

  • Place a cherry with the stem up on top of a glass bottle and then push a chopstick through the cherry. The pit will fall into the bottle, conveniently eliminating extra cleanup.
  • Cut around the edge of the stem with a knife and then pull the pit out using the stem.

Once pitted, you can bake your cherries into a pie, add a few to a salad or place a cherry on top of your ice cream sundae.
