Crops
Crop farming is an essential part of the business to ensure utilization of every part of the fertile soil and steady supply of water on the farm.
The farm boasts over 200 hectares currently under pivot irrigation where cultivation of rotational crops which includes maize, alfalfa and peas takes place. These crops are mainly used for commodity trading.
Regrettably waste is always evident with crop farming, but the team ensures that all of the waste material is deployed back into the farm:
- Maize waste is used for mulch. The mulch is placed under the trees in the vineyards and orchards to assist in water loss during evaporation in the hot summer months and with the added benefit of ensuring great natural compost which enriches the soil structure.
- Pea and alfalfa are baled and used as additional feed for the sable and exotic game on the farm during the dry winter months.
